Developing a project biochar from biomass residues in Northern Thailand.
Biochar Pilot Project at Suan Lahu Organic Coffee Farm
KORA Climate Co., Ltd. has joint hands with Suan Lahu Coffee Company in piloting the production of biochar from farm residues on it’s plantation. Suan Lahu coffee farm is located at the border of Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai provinces in Northern Thailand.
Biochar is a product that results from the controlled burning of biomass with little to no oxygen. It can be used for soil improvement and reduction of energy intensive synthetic fertilizers and can significantly contribute to climate change mitigation.
The production and utilization of biochar is considered a nature-based solution to remove carbon from the atmosphere, which has a great number of social, economic and environmental benefits. Grinding the biochar and mixing it with compost guarantees that it is not used for other purposes and finds its way into the ground where carbon is being stored for a long period of time. Here it increases soil fertility and microbial activity.
The production and use of biochar addresses several sustainability goals, like improving soil health thus reducing the need for fossil fuel-based fertilizers and improved air quality by reducing open burning. It also provides an additional income to farming communities and contributes to a resource efficient circular economy, by making good use of natural resources and residues.
KORA Climate is looking discussing with potential partners to up-scale the biochar activities and our goal is to register biochar activities as carbon removal projects and use the certified carbon removal credits to compensate for our and our client’s residual carbon footprint, i.e. emissions that are hard or impossible to avoid otherwise.
