Congratulations to the SPAR6CThailand team on successfully organizing the final workshop for the 3 work packages on (1) producing an Article 6 Operations Manual, (2) conducting a Study of Benefit-Sharing Approaches for Mitigation Outcomes and (3) developing Authorization Criteria for Thailand under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, on 26 February at the Amari Watergate Hotel in Bangkok.
Key speakers and participants of the workshop included Dr. Phirun, General Director of DCCE and Paweena Panichayapichet, Manager of Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (TGO), and representatives from several of Thailand’s ministries.
This workshop marks a crucial step in strengthening Thailand’s readiness for Article 6 implementation and international carbon credit trading.
The study on Sharing Mitigation Outcomes explored strategies to mitigate ITMO overselling risks, methods for sharing mitigation outcomes, international case studies on how fees and levies from Article 6 activities are allocated, and potential implications for Thailand. The speaker presented global examples and provided recommendations tailored to Thailand’s context.
Another key session introduced the Article 6 Operations Manual, detailing its structure, key procedures, and step-by-step guidance for relevant organizations to navigate the approval and implementation processes.
Additionally, the workshop addressed how authorization criteria can ensure that projects align with Thailand’s national climate goals and the rules of Art.6 of the Paris Agreement. The team presented criteria based on Thailand’s new Guidelines for the Use of Carbon Credits for International Objectives, reinforcing the country’s commitment to transparent and effective carbon market participation.
KORA Climate is glad to be a part of the SPAR6C programme, with Thailand being one of the 4 implementing countries (Colombia, Pakistan, Thailand, and Zambia). The programme is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) through the International Climate Initiative (IKI) and project implementation is led by the Global Green Growth Institute(GGGI). A consortium of partners, Kommunalkredit Public Consulting GmbH/ Energy Changes oversees SPAR6C Thailand, with KORA Climate and Neyen Consulting partnering in the 3 in-country assignments. Our team continues working on a version of the Art.6 Operations Manual especially for project developers in Thailand. We look forward to continuing this journey toward a well structured and efficient carbon market in Thailand! 🌏💡
