Analysis of the Impact of Transition Credits from Early Coal Power Plant Retirement

In partnership with Neyen Consulting, KORA Climate is happy to kick off a new project, “Analysis of the Impact of Transition Credits from Early Coal Power Plant Retirement,”

This project will examine how transition credits for coal power phase-outs can contribute to a sustainable transition to renewable energy. It will take an independent look at the existing carbon market, the demand for these credits, how they could support emission goals in both voluntary and compliance markets and the impact of transition credits on the NDC targets of host and acquiring countries. It aims to provide clear, practical insights into using transition credits to advance climate goals in our region (Asia-Pacific).

Transition credits can be vital in accelerating the early retirement of coal-fired power plants, which is essential for achieving a sustainable energy transition. Coal is one of the most carbon-intensive energy sources and phasing it out is critical for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating climate change. Transition credits provide financial incentives that make it economically viable for coal plant operators to close facilities ahead of schedule, thereby reducing future emissions and fostering a faster shift to cleaner energy sources.

The analysis will look at different aspects of early coal retirement projects, in particular in relationship to specific transition credit methodologies under development, the identification of carbon market supply and demand situation and policy factors impacting the adoption of transition credits, opportunities and associated risk from transition credits and the implications of using transition credits for NDCs, VCM and other purposes.

At KORA Climate, we are dedicated to advancing sustainable energy solutions that align with ambitious climate goals. This project represents an important step in an independent assessment of the opportunities and possible associated risks of transition credits for the early retirement of coal power plants and the implications for the carbon market from the use of such credits.

🌐KORA Climate at IBI Academy in Thailand🌐

We are excited to share that our team participated in the IBI Biochar Academy workshop at Chiang Mai Thailand. More than 60 participants from over 12 countries attended the workshop, which focused on sustainable development and innovations in biochar and created an established community for biochar specialists.

The Chiang Mai University biochar road’s flexural strength was enhanced by using biochar as an admixture to replace sand(fine aggregates) for construction.
The Biochar Academy was a great opportunity to meet practitioners and exchange experience with different technologies, biomasses, and project designs. We learned about an amazingly broad range of applications for this fantastic material.

KORA Climate is also looking for chances to work together on biochar projects in Thailand and the SEA region, aiming to make a bigger impact with eco-friendly practices for a sustainable future!

Kick-off Meeting for the Development of an Article 6 Operation Manual in Thailand under SPAR6C project (IKI)

We are excited to share a significant milestone in our ongoing project. Dr. Phirun Saiyasitpanich, Director-General of the Department of Climate Change and Environment (DCCE), chaired the launch of the “Kick-off Meeting for the Article 6 Operation Manual in Thailand” with national stakeholders, on April 2, 2024.

The objective of the project is to assist the Government of Thailand in enhancing the enabling environment for implementing the national Article 6 framework, including developing a comprehensive manual of procedures and conducting capacity-building activities for various stakeholders.

The preparation of the Article 6 Operation Manual is a key activity under the SPAR6C project, supported by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the Federal Republic of Germany. This manual will guide project development by carbon market participants, including government management entities and private sector project developers.

KORA Climate is proud to be part of the team of esteemed partners: the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), Kommunalkredit Public Consulting (KPC) and Neyen. KORA Climate supports the coordination with Thailand’s project counterparts, the consultation process and contributes expertise on Art.6 processes. Together, we will work closely to ensure the manual aligns with Thailand’s specific needs and context.

This project underscores our commitment to driving positive environmental impact and contributing to global efforts in combating climate change. Stay connected with us for more updates🌏🌿

🌿 A Green Kickoff to 2024: Our Biochar Journey Begins! 🌱

As we step into a new year, we’re excited to share a significant milestone in our biochar project development! 🌍

Suan Lahu Coffee Farm hosted a farmers’ workshop on January 14, focusing on showcasing and spreading knowledge about biochar production and utilize villages. 15 farmers from 8 villages joined the workshop. The objective was to demonstrate biochar production process and sharing knowledge on the benefits of biochar for soil improvement and the reduction of open burning of corn residues. The farmers showed great interest in the biochar production and asked for more support to apply biochar.

Each village received a biochar pyrolyzer, setting the stage for independent biochar production. Our experienced staff at Suan Lahu Coffee Farm will provide ongoing guidance and support in this eco-friendly venture.

The impactful workshop was held in partnership with KORA-Climate and co-sponsored by Mr Jean-Baptist Berne.

KORA Climate was honored to be a partner of this Carbon Removal activity which is being seen as an important step towards scaling up the biochar activities in Northern Thailand.

We’re not just talking about change; we’re actively creating it together. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue this journey towards sustainability.
